Gaping defects and large diaphragmatic hcrnia may defy standard attempts for repair and rcconstriction. Undcr such circumstances a graft must be incorporated to thc rcconstriction to bridge the gap or reinforce an othcrwise tenuous repair.
Many kinds of matcrials have been tried such as fascia, skin, muscle, metallic materi aLSand synthetie meshes. Succesfull results have bcen obtained in the vcntral, umblieal
and inguinal hernias. The defects of diaphragm is not uneommoly eneountered in the diaphragm as a result of either eongcnita! or acquircd lcsions or traumatic dcfeets due to trauma, cxcision of the cxtensive tumorso
Wc have met old diaphragmatic defects in the hard wire diseases in eattle. The percentage of the case was about % 15 in Turkey.
This study was undertaken to determinc the reparing effeets of the synthetic materials
in the hernia diahragmatica. We used synthetic materials (Mersilene Mesh) in this study.
10 dogs (in diffcrent ages and different sex) were uscd experimentally. The operations
were performed under intubation anaesthesia and five ofthem at the left, others at the right
cavum thoracis.
The defeets were 12 x 12 cm' •• 20 x 20 cm'.
One ease which have had hernia diaphragmatica due to the pericarditis traumatica
was operaltd wıth the same tcchnic. This was a young caw, Observation period was 16
months. The mctod andresults of the cases were satisfactory
