Öz

Bu derlemede zihinsel ve bedensel engeli bulunan bireylerde bir tedavi yöntemi olarak uygulanan hippoterapi ve bu
amaçla kullanılan atların özelliklerinin ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır. Kısaca “bir at yardımıyla tedavi” anlamına gelen hippoterapi,
neuro-fizyolojik bir etki mekanizmasına sahiptir. En çok algılama, konuşma, iletişim ve sosyal davranış ile psikomotor
problemi olanlarda uygulanan hippoterapi, hastaların toplumsal entegrasyonuna sağladığı faydalardan dolayı da tercih edilmektedir.
Bu yöntem, atın vücut sıcaklığı ve ritmik hareketlerinin hastanın lokomotor ve merkezi sinir sistemi üzerinde oluşturduğu
iyileştirici etkilerden yararlanılarak uygulanmaktadır. Bedensel ve zihinsel engelli bireylerin atla terapisinde; eğitilmiş ve
bilgili bir ekibin varlığı kadar amaca uygun ve nitelikli bir hippoterapi atının varlığı da büyük önem taşımaktadır. Amaca uygun
hippoterapi atları, beden yapısı ve ruhsal-davranışsal özellikleri dikkate alınarak tespit edilmektedir

Öz

The aim of this study is to highlight both the hippotherapy, which is used as a method of therapy for mentally and
physically disabled individuals and features of horses used in therapy. Shortly, hippotherapy, which means “the therapy by
means of a horse”, has neuro-physiological mechanism. Hippotherapy is applied especially on individuals who have usually
perception, speech, communication, social behaviour, and psychomotor problems because of its advantage for the handicapped
social integration. This method is used by means of horses’ body temperature and rhythmic movements to maintain
therapeutic effects on the central nervous system of the handicapped. In the therapy of mentally and physically disabled individuals,
the presence of qualified horses is as substantial as a trained and qualified team. Hippotherapy horses proper for the
aim are determined in respect to their body structure and psycho-behavioural characteristics.
