EVALUATION OF THE AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF MEDICAL FACULTY STUDENTS ABOUT BRAIN DEATH AND ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION

OBJECTIVE: This survey study aimed to evaluate the awareness of medical students about organ transplantation and brain death.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 528 students (age: 20.64 ± 1.75 years) studying at Afyonkarahisar University of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine participated in the study voluntarily. 239 (45.2%) of the participants are boys and 289 girls (54.7%). In addition to the questions containing demographic information, the participants were given a questionnaire with 22 questions on the subject. After the normal distribution of the data (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) in the study, independent variable t test and ANOVA tests were applied for comparisons between groups. Besides the average and standard deviation values of the data, frequency and percentage values were determined.
RESULTS: %97 of the participants ware aware of brain death definition (p <0.001). It was found that 42% of the participants learned the brain death definition from media which was the most common. In the question that the frequency of brain death was questioned, 32% of the participants marked the traumatic brain injury and placed it in the first place. In the question about how the brain death was diagnosed, it was found that that only 49% of the patients heard of Apnea test although 73% stated that it was diagnosed clinically. 24% of the participants think that the patient who is brain dead can return to life. Only 16% think that transplantation from a patient with brain death is not correct. It was determined that 5% of the participants had donated organs and 90% of them would allow organ transplantation (p <0.001).
CONCLUSIONS: We are living in a country in which high organ transplantation is needed. We think we have to increase awareness and education about brain death and organ transplantation firstly in medical students and the community.

BEYİN ÖLÜMÜ VE ORGAN NAKLİ HAKKINDA TIP FAKÜLTESİ ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN FARKINDALIĞININ ve BİLGİ DÜZEYİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

AMAÇ: Bu anket çalışmamızda organ nakli ve beyin ölümü hakkında tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin farkındalığını değerlendirmeyi amaçlandı.
GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Çalışmaya Afyonkarahisar Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesinde okuyan 528 öğrenci (yaş: 20.64±1.75 yıl) gönüllü olarak katılmıştır. Katılımcıların 239’u (%45.2) erkek ve 289 kızdır (%54.7). Çalışmada katılımcılara demografik bilgileri içeren soruların yanısıra konuyla ilgili 22 soruluk anket çalışması yaptırılmıştır. Çalışmada verilerin normal dağılım göstermesinden (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) sonra gruplar arası karşılaştırmalar için bağımsız değişken t testi ve ANOVA testleri uygulanmıştır. Verilerin ortalama ve standart sapma değerlerinin yanında frekans ve yüzde değerleri tespit edilmiştir.
BULGULAR: Katılımcıların % 97’si Beyin ölümü tanımını duyduğunu belirtmiştir (p<0.001). Beyin ölümü tanımını ise en sık cevap olan %42’sinin medyadan öğrendikleri saptanmıştır. Beyin ölümü sebepleri sıklığının sorgulandığı soruda katılanların % 32’si travmatik beyin hasarını işaretleyerek birinci sıraya yerleştirmiştir. Beyin ölümü tanısının nasıl konulduğunun sorgulandığı soruda %73 ‘ü klinik olarak tanı konulduğunu belirtmesine rağmen Apne testini sadece %49’unun duyduğu tespit edilmiştir. Beyin ölümü gerçekleşmiş hastanın hayata geri dönebileceğini katılımcıların % 24’ü düşünmektedir. Sadece % 16’sı beyin ölümü olan hastadan organ nakletmenin doğru olmadığını düşünmektedir. Katılanlardan 25 kişinin (%5) organ bağışında bulunduğu, %90’ı bir yakınının veya kendisinin organ nakline izin vereceği saptanmıştır(p<0.001).
SONUÇ: Organ nakline fazlasıyla ihtiyaç duyulan bir ülkede yaşamaktayız. Öncelikle tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinde olmak üzere halkın beyin ölümü ve organ nakli konusunda farkındalığı ve eğitimi arttırmanın gerekli olduğu kanaatindeyiz.
