Öz

Amaç: Çalışmamızın amacı, farklı üniversitelerdeki diş hekimliği fakültesi öğrencilerinin uzmanlık seçiminde rol oynayan önemli kriterleri tanımlamak, ortodonti bölümüne bakış açısını ve ortodontide uzmanlaşma konusundaki motivasyonlarını tespit etmektir.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmamıza Kırıkkale Üniversitesi (KÜ), İzmir Katip Çelebi Üniversitesi (İKÇÜ) ve Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi (VYÜ)’nde eğitim görmekte olan dördüncü ve beşinci sınıf öğrencileri dahil edildi. KÜ (n=141), İKÇÜ (n=169) ve VYÜ (n=74) olmak üzere toplam 384 öğrenci 3 grupta değerlendirildi. Bireylerden ortodonti uzmanlığına bakış açılarını değerlendirmek amaçlı 10 sorudan oluşan anketi doldurmaları istendi. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde ki-kare testi kullanıldı.
Bulgular: Öğrencilerin %61,71’i ortodonti bölümünden okul öncesi dönemde haberdar olduğunu belirtti. Uzmanlık dalı seçiminde en dikkat edilen kriter %67,96 ile uzmanlık dalına olan ilgi olarak belirlendi. Uzmanlık yapmayı hayal ettikleri ilk üç bölüm; Protetik Diş Tedavisi, Ağız, Diş ve Çene Cerrahisi ve Ortodonti olarak sıralanmaktadır. Farklı fakültedeki öğrenciler arasında bu soruya verilen cevapta anlamlı fark bulundu (p<0,05). KÜ ve İKÇÜ’deki öğrenciler en çok maddi kazanç sağlayabileceği bölümü Ortodonti olarak belirtirken, VYÜ’ndeki öğrenciler Protetik Diş Tedavisi olarak belirtti. Hasta bakımı açısından en önemli bölümün sorgulandığı soruya Ağız, Diş ve Çene Cerrahisi bölümü olarak yanıt verdiler. En az önemli olan bölüm ise %5,7 ile Restoratif Diş Hekimliği oldu. Ortodonti bölümü ise en az önemli olarak düşünülen üçüncü bölüm oldu. Diş hekimliği açısından en önemli bölümler sırasıyla Ağız, Diş ve Çene Cerrahisi ve Protetik Diş Tedavisi olurken; Ortodonti beşinci sırada yer aldı. Sınıflar ve fakültelerdeki öğrenciler arasında bu soruya verilen cevap arasında anlamlı fark bulundu (p<0,05).
Sonuç: Farklı üniversitelerdeki diş hekimliği fakültelerinde eğitim gören öğrencilerin uzmanlıklara bakış açılarında farklılıklar olduğu görüldü. Ortodonti ile ilgili etkilendikleri tanıtıcı deneyimlerde, gelecekte ortodonti bölümüne duyulacak ihtiyacın sorgulanmasında, hasta bakımı açısından en önemli bölümün değerlendirilmesinde ve ortodonti bölümünde uzmanlaşmak istemelerinin nedenlerinde farklılıklar olduğu görüldü.

Perspectives of Dental Students at Different Universities on Orthodontics Specialization

Öz

Objective: The aim of this study is to define the important criteria that play a role in selection of specialization, to determine the perspective of the orthodontic department and their motivations for specialization in orthodontics.
Material and Methods: A total of 384 dentistry students were divided into 3 groups. Forty and fifth grade students studying at Kırıkkale University (KU), İzmir Katip Çelebi University (İKÇÜ), Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (VYU) participated. Individuals were asked to fill out questionnaire composed of 10 questions. The datas was analysed by Chi square test.
Results: 61.71 % of the dental students stated that they were aware of the orthodontics deparment in the pre-school period. The most important criterion was determined as the interest in the specialty in the selection of specialization. Prosthetic Dentistry, Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics are the first three departments that students dream of specializing in. There was a significant difference in the answer given to this question among students from different faculties (p<0.05). When evaluated in terms of patient care, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was the most important part. The least important criterion was Restorative Dentistry with a rate of 5.7%. Orthodontics was the third department that was considered the least important criterion. In terms of dentistry, Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthetic Dentistry and Orthodontics respectively considered as the most important departments. A significant difference was found between these preferences of students (p<0.05).
Conclusion: We observed that there were differences in the perspectives of students studying at different dental faculties in different universities on specializations. There were differences in the introductory experiences about orthodontics, the questioning of the need for orthodontics in the future, the evaluation of the most important department in terms of patient care, and the reasons for wanting to specialize in orthodontics.
