Investigation of the effects of IOL and/or capsullar tension ring (CTR) on posterior capsullaropasification (PCO) development in rabbits

Abstract

Effects of intraocular lens (IOL) and\or capsullar tension ring (CTR) usage in prevention of posterior capsullar opasification (PCO) formation in rabbits were studied with ophthalmascopic and histopathologic parameters. Lensectomy by phacoemulsification tecnique in 60 eyes of 30 healthy New Zealand rabbits were made. 30 rabbits were divided into 3 groups. In first group (n=10) IOL is placed after lensectomy, in second group (n=10) CTR and in third group (n=10) IOL+CTR is placed in the right eyes after lensectomy. Ophthalmascopic examinations were made in postoperative period and at the end of the 6 months the rabbits are evaluated with histopathology. In histopathologic examination fibrocyte and fibroblast migration and lens epithelium cell proliferations which are signs of the PCO is less commonly seen in CTR\IOL group. After lensectomy with phacoemulsification long term effects of CTR and\or IOL in prevention of PCO was investigated. In conclusion CTR\IOL group was found to be succesfull in prevention of PCO formation

Tavşanlarda kapsül germe halkası (KGH)’nın ve/veya intraokuler lens (İOL)’in posterior kapsüller opasifikasyona (PKO) etkisinin değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Tavşanlarda intraokuler lens (İOL) ve / veya kapsül germe halkalarının (KGH), posterior kapsüller opasifikasyona (PKO) olan etkisinin oftalmaskopik ve histopatolojik parametreler ile araştırılması amaçlandı. Çalışmada 30 adet sağlıklı ergin Yeni Zelanda tavşanının 60 gözüne fakoemülsifikasyon tekniği ile lensektomi uygulandı. Birinci grubun sağ gözüne (n=10) lensektomi sonrası İOL, ikinci grup sağ gözüne (n=10) lensektomi sonrası KGH, üçüncü grupta yine sağ gözlerine (n=10) lensektomi sonrası İOL ve KGH uygulamaları yapıldı. Deneklerin postoperatif dönemde oftalmaskopik muayeneleri yapıldı ve 6 aylık gözlem süresinin sonunda histopatolojik değerlendirmeye alındı. Histopatolojik değerlendirmede PKO’nun göstergesi olan fibrosit ve fibroblast migrasyonu ve lens epitelyum hücrelerinde proliferasyon açısından KGH\İOL grubunun daha üstün olduğu izlendi. Fakoemülsifikasyon tekniği ile lensektomi sonrası PKO’nun engellenmesinde KGH ve /veya İOL lerin uzun dönem etkisi araştırıldı. Sonuçta KGH\IOL birlikte kullanıldığı gruplarda PKO’nun engellendiği ve bu yöntemin daha başarılı olduğu kanısına varıldı
